Our experiment shows that Google Translate struggles to translate colloquial phrases, with only a 72% accuracy rate on average across all languages analysed, compared to 94% for business websites’ content and 96% for literary text. The average mistakes and readability score of Google translate across different types of texts: Type of text The Google translate experiment Lack of human understanding leads Google Translate to fail at translating colloquial phrases To determine how accurate Google Translate is, we tested its ability to translate business sites, literary texts and everyday phrases – from English to Italian, German, and Spanish and vice versa – comparing Google’s translations with the know-how of true bilingual language experts. Yet, despite the improvements Google has tried to implement, can Google Translate really match the skill of bilingual speakers? We can’t be the only ones who’ve noticed questionable phrasing when trying to translate a website or even simple expressions… Since its launch in April 2006, Google Translate’s quality of translation has improved a lot thanks to advances in machine learning, such as the GNMT (Google Neural Machine Translation) model. That helps the translation appear like it’s replacing the original text rather than superimposing it on top.Google Translate is the world’s number one translation software. Although Lens has been able to translate images on mobile for years, the latest version that debuted last year uses the same tech powering the company’s Magic Eraser, which debuted on the Pixel 6 but is now available on older Pixels and Google One. “Lens translate” branding below the result indicates that it uses the same generative adversarial networks (GAN) powering AR Translate for Google Lens. In addition, it lists 113 available source languages (and it can automatically detect them) and 133 destination languages. The web interface includes options to copy the text, download the translated image or clear it. After uploading a photo or screenshot from your computer, a translation appears that (in most cases) should look about as seamless as the original text.
You’ll find the option on the Google Translate website, where you'll see a new Images tab at the top. It uses the same tech as the AR Translate tool for Google Lens, which performs real-time translations on smartphones.
Google Translate on the web can now convert text from images.
